The Department of English, Faculty of Culture and Representation, of Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts, located on the Imadegawa Campus in Kyoto City, announces an opening for a five-year limited contract position, beginning in April 2025.

Five years, beginning April 1, 2025. Non- renewable contract.

※If you have had employment contracts with any of the schools, colleges or universities of the Doshisha after April 2013, and if the period of time when you did not have an employment contract is less than 6 months in length between April 2013 and the date of employment for this recruitment, there may be a limit to the duration of the continuous employment contract period. Therefore, the contract period for this position may be shorter than five years as stated above.

Qualifications
  • Sympathetic understanding of Christianity and the founding principles of Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts.
  • Ph. D in related field, or equivalent.
  • Native English ability, or the ability to lecture and teach in English.
  • Possess sufficient proficiency in Japanese for performing both educational and administrative duties
  • Applicants should have research accomplishments in communication studies in areas other than English language education and communication skills. This may include, for example, academic fields such as nonverbal communication and communication theory applied in film studies. In addition, experience in teaching English language skills is required.
Courses to be taught Undergraduate courses in communication studies; seminar courses. English skills courses
Duties Active involvement in educational and research activities; teaching and instruction; provide wide-ranging educational guidance to students; attend departmental, faculty and college-wide meetings; plan and participate in curricular and extra-curricular activities; perform administrative and examination-related tasks as required; design, develop and coordinate educational events of the college and the Department of English.
Salary and benefits To be calculated according to the candidate’s age as of April 1, 2025, in accordance with the Doshisha salary scale. 
*Mandatory retirement age is 65.

[4] Three off-prints/copies of academic publications or dissertation.
[5] A 1,000-word essay stating your view of higher education, the theme and content of your research, and your aspirations for teaching at this college.
[6] A copy of the applicant’s highest degree certificate or diploma.
[7] A list of current courses taught and the syllabi (at least two major courses)
[8] The names and contact details (email address) of two individuals who are qualified to evaluate your teaching and other abilities. Must be available to respond to emails at the beginning of September.

Interview date Saturday, September 21, 2024
*Interviewees will be asked to conduct the following at the interview:
a 20-minute model lesson for undergraduate students on a topic of an introductory level in Communication Studies and in a teaching style of their choice.
*Only those to be interviewed will be notified by email sometime after 10:00 A.M. on Friday, September 13, 2024.
*Please note that travel expenses are the responsibility of the interview candidates and will not be reimbursed.
