Welcome Party

A welcome party was held in the James-kan. About 40 people attended, including the host families and D.W.C.L.A. students.

Club Visit 1: Calligraphy Club

Students visited the calligraphy club and practiced calligraphy. The club members wrote a sample, and the students deepened their exchanges with each other.

Club Visit 2: Kimono Dressing Club & Omotesenke Tea Ceremony Club

The students visited the Kimono Dressing Club, as the club members dressed them up in kimono. At the Omotesenke Tea Ceremony Club, the students observed the members’ tea ceremony’s procedures, and enjoyed Japanese sweets with tea.

Club Visit 3: Ohara-ryu Flower Arrangement Club

Students took part in flower arrangement at the Ohara-ryu Flower Arrangement Club.

Class Visit

Outside of the JSP, the international students took part in regular D.W.C.L.A. classes, expanding their scope of exchange.

Extracurricular Activity 1: Making Kumihimo & Kodaiji Temple

In pair groups, the students were able to make braids called “kumihimo,” and visited Kodaiji Temple.

Extracurricular Activity 2: Gion Corner & Making Yatsuhashi

In pairs, the students made Japanese sweets known as “yatsuhashi” at the “Izutsu Yatsuhashi Honpo” shop. Afterwards they viewed a traditional performance at the Gion Corner.

Takarazuka Revue

As part of the Japan Studies A class, the students enjoyed a show at the Takarazuka Grand Theater. After the show, they visited the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum.

Hiroshima Field Trip

As part of the Japan Studies B class, the students took a field trip to Hiroshima. They visited the Peace Memorial Park, listened to the experiences of the atomic bomb survivors, and also visited Miyajima.

Tofukuji Area Field Trip

As part of the Japan Studies C class, the students visited the Imakumano Shrine, Sennyuji, and the Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shine in the Tofukuji area.

Nara Field Trip

In the 1st field trip for Japan Studies D, the students visited Jikoin and Horyuji. In the tea ceremony at Jikoin, students enjoyed ceremonial tea after listening to the head priest’s sermon.

Daitokuji Temple Field Trip

In the 2nd field trip for Japan Studies D, the students visited Daitokuji Temple, and experienced seated Zen meditation.

Farewell Party

A farewell party was held in the James-kan. In addition to a course completion award ceremony, the international students gave speeches in Japanese. With picture slideshows and messages from host families and their classmates, it was a bittersweet farewell.
