Application for Tuition Reduction and Exemption

At D.W.C.L.A., we are reducing and exempting tuition fees for privately-funded international students who are facing financial hardships in their learning, with the goal of reducing the financial burden and encouraging and supporting their studies. The reduction amount is equivalent to 30% of the tuition fee that the student pays (rounded down to the nearest thousand yen).

Eligible International Students

International students for whom any of the following are applicable are eligible to apply for tuition reduction and exemption. International students who are enrolled and staying in Japan from an entrance exam system (general entrance exam, recommended entrance exam, etc.) other than the International Student Entrance Exams are also eligible.

  1. International students who are enrolled in regular undergraduate or graduate courses at this university for the purpose of obtaining a degree, and have obtained the residence status of “College Student” under the “Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act”, with the exception of government-funded international students, and international students dispatched by a foreign government.
  2. Students for whom it is recognized that studying at D.W.C.L.A. would be difficult due to economic reasons. Even if the student meets the both conditions 1 and 2 above, they will not be eligible for reduction or exemption if they meet any of the following conditions.
    1. Students who are enrolled beyond the prescribed study period
    2. International students who have been enrolled for the 2nd year or more, and for whom the following apply. However, if the following 1 or 2 cases apply, and the International Affairs Office Director determines that there are unavoidable circumstances that lead to the applicable learning result, with the approval of the International Exchange Committee the student may be eligible for one year only.
      1. Students with a cumulative GPA of 1.5 or below.
      2. Students who earn less than 10 credits per semester on average. However, this shall not apply to students enrolled in the doctorate program (second half).
      3. Students who have a considerably bad learning attitude, or regularly miss classes without a proper reason. In these cases, The International Affairs Office Director may make the decision that it is not appropriate to reduce or exempt the tuition fees, after getting the opinion of the department chief that the applicable international student belongs to, and the approval of the International Exchange Committee.

Procedure Method

1. Submit the Tuition Fees Reduction or Exemption application documents (for Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts)

New Students

The international student shall submit the application documents themselves to the International Affairs Office at the time of the enrollment procedures. If they wish to have their tuition fees reduced or exempted, international students who have passed entrance exams other than the International Student Entrance Exam for both the undergraduate and graduate schools should make a request to Admissions Department before completing the application procedures, and submit the application documents. If the request is not made by the deadline listed in “About Admission Procedures”, included in the passing notification, the student will be required to pay the tuition fees in full. However, if the application documents are submitted by the end of April, an amount equivalent to the tuition fee reduction or exemption amount may be returned with the approval of the International Affairs Office Director.

Existing Students

The application documents for the following year are sent out every January. The international student should submit the application documents to the International Affairs Office by the deadline (mid-February).

2. Confirming “College Student” Residence Status

Please show us your residence card when submitting the application documents for reduction or exemption of tuition fees.

Caution:
If the “College Student” residence status cannot be obtained by the above deadline due to reasons such as application/renewal time, please bring documents that certify the application/renewal process is underway (Immigration Bureau reception certificate, etc.). Later, upon obtaining the “College College Student” residence status, the International Affairs Office will confirm your residence card. If the student is unable to obtain the “College Student” residence status, the tuition exemption will be revoked, and an amount equivalent to the exemption amount will be collected additionally.
