Message from the President
By supporting diverse visions,
we aim to become the institution that contributes to society
The early Meiji period (1868–77). Even amid the changes toward modernization, Japanese society at that time was very reluctant about higher education for women. At such a time, Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts (DWCLA) was established as a pioneer of women’s educational institutions in Japan.
DWCLA will reach a major milestone of 150 years in 2026.
In the modern era, where people are freed from frameworks such as gender and pursue their own forms of self-realization, what is the mission that universities should fulfill? I believe that responding to the diverse visions that students hold will become the raison d'être of DWCLA.
“I want to excel in a field where I can demonstrate my characteristics and passion.” “I want to advance in my career and become a leader for others.” “I want to enrich both my work and my personal life in a balanced way.” Every student has their own vision for the future. Maintaining the approach of “supporting each individual” that has remained unchanged since our founding, we align with these visions of our students. We provide skills, knowledge, opportunities for experience, and generous support to help realize their visions. In this way, Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts will continue to nurture individuals who can contribute to society by utilizing their diverse thoughts and unique characteristics even beyond our 150th anniversary.
