Literature

Students can deepen their understanding of literary works and historical transitions of Western English-speaking countries

Ranging from Shakespearian plays, drama and poetry to classic contemporary novels and fantasy

Culture

Students can study about the culture, history and society of Western English-speaking countries

A wide range of courses are available in topics such as race, class and gender studies.

Linguistics

Students can learn about the origin and characteristics of language itself and the roles that it plays in modern society. Students can also study the language structure of English and Japanese.

Students can explore the possibilities of words based on various methodologies in English language education, phonetics, linguistics and psychology.

Communication

Students will deepen their understanding of the similarities and differences between English and Japanese communication and the relationship between culture and communication.

Using the English language as a tool, students will learn about various issues related to human relationships that arise from TPO, backgrounds and temperaments of speakers and listeners, gender differences, national temperaments, and other factors.

Courses of Interest

Public Speaking I / II

This course aims to improve student’s English communication and presentation skills through increasing vocabulary and improving pronunciation, intonation through conversation and speech practice in small groups.

 

Introduction to British Culture

This course teaches students the significance of cultural diversity by focusing on various aspects of British culture such as history, geography, ethnicity and society.

 

Fantasy Genealogy I / II

Students analyse representative works of fantasy literature to gain fundamental knowledge and understanding of various topics related to Western society, history, customs, nationality.

 

Airline English

Students deepen their understanding of the field of hospitality while learning specialized English and communication skills which are required for a career in the airline industry.

 

Kyoto Guidance in English I / II

Students acquire the knowledge and skills to be able to introduce and explain the culture, traditions and history of Kyoto. Students learn how to give presentations about Kyoto’s World Heritage Sites, as well as to guide guests around Kyoto through practical training and fieldwork.

 

Translation Method I / II

Students learn the basics of translation while being trained in doing translation in various genres.

 

Topics in English A - G

1st year students take this course to study a variety of topics all in English which are taught by a native English-speaking teacher in order to improve their communication ability and critical thinking skills.
