Japanese Language Immersion Course

The Japanese Language Immersion Course at Doshisha Women's College began in 2008. It is composed of two terms. The first term, Term A is a four-week program from the end of May to the middle of June. Following the completion of Term A, Term B begins, which is also a four-week program from the middle of June to the middle of July. Students can stay for eight weeks, participating in both courses if they wish. The program offers introductory Japanese language courses to students whose first language is not Japanese. Throughout the course, students have full access to all the facilities available on campus. In addition to studying in the classroom, students can also experience multiple fieldtrips during the course, which include tours of Kyoto and Nara.

Application Guidelines

1. Outline of Program

  1. 1) Course Dates :
    Term A : May 19th (Monday) to June 13th, 2014 (Friday)
    Term B : June 16th (Monday) to July 11th , 2014 (Friday)
  2. 2) Place : Imadegawa Campus (Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture)
  3. 3) Course Content :
    • Japanese Language Course (in the morning) : Ten 90-minute classes per week
    • Japanese Cultural Experiences : Kimono wearing, tea ceremony, calligraphy, flower arrangement, etc. and Japanese confectionary making.
    • Field Trips : Visit to temples and shrines etc in Kyoto and Nara.
    • Social Events : Welcome party, farewell party, club visits, and other events with students at Kyotanabe campus, etc.
  4. 4) Accommodation : Doshisha Women's College offers two types of accommodation:
    • a) Homestay (two meals per day) : Homes of students or graduates of Doshisha Women's College or Doshisha University.
      ※Host families reside within 90 minutes from Imadegawa Campus.
    • b) Mukaijima Gakusei Center(a single room and no meals) : The international student dormitory in Kyoto City
      ※Mukaijima Gakusei Center is located around 40 minutes (20 minutes walk and 20 minutes by train) from Imadegawa campus. Free internet access is available only in the shared study room and lounge, not in your room. For further information, please visit their website at

      Each participant's accommodation will be primarily determined by the preferences they indicate on the application form. Participants should move into their accommodations the day before the term starts, and leave in the morning of the day the term ends.
  5. 5) Program Size : Each term is limited to a maximum of 10 students
  6. 6) Transcript and Certificate : The transcript and the certificate of completion will be given by the president of Doshisha Women's College to students who have successfully completed the program.
    Doshisha Women’s College does not give school credits to the participants.

2.Qualification for Participation

An applicant must meet all the following requirements.

  • ・Be an undergraduate student or a graduate of a university abroad.
  • ・Be a female student 18 years or older as of April 1, 2014.
  • ・Have at least 6 months of Japanese study experience prior to the course.
  • ・Be recommended by the home institution.

3. Program and Accommodation Fees, etc.

  • The program fees : 171,100 yen 126,100 yen per term
    (Tuition has been reduced by 30% since 2011! )
    Program fees include tuition fees, the field trip fees (transportation and admission fee),
    welcome and farewell party fees, and the insurance premium.
  • The accommodation fees as well as meals depend on which type of accommodation an applicant chooses (The applicants from affiliated institutions are exempt from paying accommodation fee, as the financial aid will be allotted).
    • a) Homestay : 15,000 yen a week – 60,000 yen (two meals per day)
    • b) Mukaijima Gakusei Center : 6,850 yen a week – 27,400 yen (no meals)
  • Others
    The program and accommodation fees do NOT include the followings:
    ・Airfare,
    ・Transportation between Kansai airport and the accommodation,
    ・Cost of commuting
      (Doshisha Women's College bears cost that exceeds 5,000 yen per month)
    ・Lunch fees
    ・Rental fee for comforters (in case of staying at Mukaijima Gakusei Center)
    ・Phone bills

4. Financial Aid

A limited amount of financial aid (60,000yen) is available to student from DWCLA-affiliated institutions and to nationals from ASEAN-member countries. For a homestay student, all of the amount will be paid to the host family to cover 2 meals/day and basic living expenses. For a lodger at Mukaijima Gakusei Center residence, 27,400 yen will be allotted to the dormitory expense and the remaining 32,600 yen will be given to the participant at the beginning of the course.

5. How to apply to the JLIC  *JLIC2014 application is now closed.

The applicants must submit the International Exchange Center of Doshisha Women's College either directly or through the staff in charge at their home institution by the end of January (*The application deadline is extended until March 14,2014.)

※All applicants must submit the Homestay Questionnaire (No.3 document) regardless of their choice in accommodation.

6. Final Decision on the Program Implementation and Acceptance

Applicants will be notified of the results of their application either directly or through home institution by the end of February (*The application deadline is extended until March 14,2014.).

7. Payment of Participation Expense

As for the participation expense, please make a transfer to Doshisha Women's College either directly or through your home institution by the end of April (according to Japan Standard Time). Cancellation one week before the program starts or thereafter (according to Japan Standard Time) will incur a cancellation fee equivalent to 10% of program and accommodation fees.

8. Visa Information

Please ask the diplomatic missions if a visa is required or not in advance.

9. Insurance

The content and coverage of the insurance that is covered during the program is as follows:
The participation fees contain insurance.

  Treatment cost Three million yen
Disease Treatment cost One million yen
Liability for personal injury or property One hundred million yen
Loss or damage of your own personal belongings Three hundred thousand yen
